Welcome to Anaheim, California, where the sun shines bright and dreams are born! Here, we meet the inspiring story of Shannon Bustillos, a remarkable individual whose journey from a scholarship athlete to a legal professional showcases determination, talent, and a sprinkle of sports magic. Let’s take a closer look at the life of this incredible woman, who is proving that with hard work and passion, anything is possible!
Shannon is a shining example of the American dream. Growing up in a working-class family, she was raised by her mother, a dedicated AAA customer service representative, and her father, a hardworking construction worker. As a first-generation college student, Shannon viewed education as a pivotal path to achieving her dreams and enriching her life beyond the world of athletics.
Shannon’s love affair with sports ignited at the tender age of 10 when she made the switch from baseball to softball, inspired by her older brother, Ryan. By just 14 years old, she was already making waves in the competitive softball scene, playing for the renowned Orange County Batbusters, a team well-respected throughout Southern California.
Throughout her high school years at Canyon High School, Shannon was a force to be reckoned with. As a prominent member of the varsity softball team, she not only showcased her skills but also snagged multiple accolades, including the coveted MVP title. Her accomplishments led her to earn a spot in Canyon’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2010, a testament to her stellar performance on the field.
During her senior year, Shannon and her team thrived, making it all the way to the CIF championship! The game turned into a nail-biter, and while they couldn’t clinch victory due to a heartbreaking walk-off grand slam, the experience left Shannon more determined than ever. The excitement would not end there!
Canyon High School’s coach, Dan Hay, played a crucial role in kickstarting Shannon’s recruitment process, reaching out to the Maryland softball head coach, Laura Watten. This introduction ultimately changed the course of her life.
After an unofficial visit that included the thrill of a Maryland football game—highlighted by an unexpected victory over Clemson—Shannon was captivated by the beautiful campus and environment. It was at that moment she knew Maryland was where she wanted to continue her journey.
From 2012 to 2015, Shannon’s collegiate career at the University of Maryland was nothing short of sensational. She shattered records, ranking first in program history for both career RBIs (153) and doubles (46). She also made her mark by ranking second in home runs (30), ninth in hits (187), and 12th in runs (105). Not only did she shine on the field, but she also excelled academically, earning All-Big Ten Second Team and various academic honors throughout her time at Maryland.
After graduating, Shannon took her talents overseas to Mannheim, Germany, where she played professional softball and even had the opportunity to coach a younger team. This experience was her first time venturing outside the U.S., allowing her to travel and explore the rich history and culture of several European countries.
Fast forward to December 2020, where Shannon graduated with her Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from Western State College of Law. She also pursued a certificate in Federal Contract Administration at UCLA, proving her commitment to lifelong learning. Today, she serves as a Contracts Manager at Bespoke Partners, a firm specializing in software executive search.
But she isn’t stopping there! Shannon is currently pursuing her MBA at Boston University, setting her sights on a future C-level position where she can make an even greater impact.
Living in Southern California with her husband, Alex, and their beloved dog, Harvey, Shannon and her family are passionate travelers who embrace every adventure. More importantly, she dreams of one day giving back to others, sharing her scholarship experience and the life-changing impact it had on her journey through education and athletics.
