The San Diego State softball team showcased their prowess in a thrilling three-game series against Utah State. Despite facing challenges due to weather, the series highlighted impressive performances, including a solid victory in the opening game and a nail-biting finale. With a strong lineup and upcoming matches, the Aztecs continue to be a force in Mountain West competition.
As the sun began to rise over San Diego, local softball fans were buzzing with excitement as the San Diego State softball team kicked off their Mountain West competition with a thrilling three-game series against Utah State! This captivating showdown took place in Logan, Utah, and had everyone at the edge of their seats. Entering the series, SDSU boasted a solid record of 15 wins and 9 losses, while Utah State was right behind with 13 wins and 10 losses.
The original plan had the teams set to play two games on Friday, followed by another showdown on Saturday, but Mother Nature had other ideas! Due to inclement weather that was expected in Logan, the schedule shifted around. Friday’s matches kicked off at 12 p.m. MT/11 a.m. PT and 2:30 p.m. MT/1:30 p.m. PT. And with Saturday’s game getting scrapped entirely, the action wrapped up on Sunday with a final game at 12 p.m. MT/11 a.m. PT.
Under the sharp guidance of head coach Stacey Nuveman Deniz, the Aztecs have been on a rollercoaster ride in Mountain West play over the past seasons. Just last year, they struggled at the beginning, but they powered through to finish with a respectable 16-6 record. SDSU kicked off the current season strong, outscoring opponents left and right!
Current stars like Cece Cellura are catching eyes with her fantastic 3.09 ERA and 33 strikeouts over 54.1 innings pitched this season. Meanwhile, teammate Grace Uribe is proving to be no slouch either, with a solid 2.98 ERA. It’s a great time to witness the emergence of freshman Ava Schaffel, who is dazzling fans with an astounding 0.86 ERA!
The opening game of the series saw SDSU come out swinging, prevailing with an 8-6 victory. The second game had some unexpected twists and eventually led to another exhilarating 8-6 win for the Aztecs after it was suspended and resumed! However, the finale left fans breathless as SDSU fought back to tie the score at four, only to be defeated 5-4 on a heart-stopping walk-off home run by Utah State’s Grace Matej.
It’s also worth mentioning that Dee Dee Hernandez hit a milestone by starting consecutive games in this gripping series due to the game suspension, breaking a bit of history on the field!
Looking ahead, the Aztecs are gearing up to face the University of San Diego in a home game on Wednesday at 6 p.m.. Additionally, they’re set to host New Mexico for a three-game series next weekend, and fans can’t wait to see how they’ll perform this time!
San Diego State softball is definitely a force to be reckoned with in the Mountain West, and with their sights set high, fans are in for a thrilling ride this season!
