Fullerton Celebrates 70 Years of Heartfelt Service with National Giving Alliance

Fullerton, CA – This city has been home to the National Giving Alliance (NGA) since 1952, creating a beautiful legacy of compassion and aid for families in need. In a world where kindness often feels rare, the NGA has been a beacon of hope and service for over seventy years. The Fullerton branch is an important part of a bigger story, one that dates all the way back to 1885 when it all began in Philadelphia, PA.

The Beginnings of NGA

Founded by Mrs. Alanson Hartpence and her vibrant group of friends, they sought inspiration from a London needlework guild. It all started with a simple mission: to provide clothing for those without. Just imagine, in their very first year, they produced a whopping 921 garments for children in hospitals, orphanages, and struggling families. Their guiding belief was straightforward yet powerful: every child should have at least two articles of clothing—one to wear and one to wash. It’s a sentiment that still resonates deeply today.

Evolution Through the Years

By the late 1890s, the NGA had grown into a significant organization, incorporating as the Needlework Guild of America in 1896. By the early 20th century, they had expanded into over 300 branches across 20 states. Prominent women, including First Ladies like Edith Roosevelt and Frances Cleveland Preston, have championed the cause over the years, showcasing the organization’s impact during challenging times like the Great Depression.

A Modern Name for a Modern Mission

Fast forward to 2023, the NGA rebranded itself from the Needlework Guild of America to the National Giving Alliance. This name change reflects their evolving mission, which embraces not just clothing but a broader array of support for communities in need. Presently, the NGA comprises 24 branches across seven states, of which the Fullerton branch is notably one of only two in California.

The Fullerton Branch: 70 Years of Service

As the Fullerton branch gears up to celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2024, it’s worth spotlighting how they actively engage with local organizations to help those who require clothing and assistance. This branch notably operates under the unique philosophy that “new clothes equalize, and used clothes pauperize.” This highlights the dignity and self-respect bestowed upon recipients, particularly the youth.

How NGA Fullerton Operates

What makes the Fullerton branch particularly special is its network of dedicated volunteers, affectionately known as “Shoppers.” They take on the task of purchasing and delivering clothing items directly to those in need, all while being reimbursed for their expenses. It’s a beautiful system that turns goodwill into action, entirely driven by donations and volunteer efforts.

Supporting the Community

The local community has a wonderful opportunity to join in this mission. Donations play a crucial role in the alliance’s ability to operate and meet the clothing needs of children and families. Whether it’s a few dollars or a heartfelt contribution of clothing items, every little bit helps foster a caring environment for those less fortunate.
