The University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team encountered a tough match against San Diego State, ending in a 4-2 defeat. Despite securing the doubles point, the Rainbow Wahine struggled in singles, managing only one victory. This setback drops their overall record to 4-4, though they remain unbeaten in Big West Conference play. Looking ahead, the team aims to bounce back in their next match against UC San Diego on March 1.
On a sunny afternoon in sunny San Diego, the University of Hawai’i women’s tennis team faced a challenging match against San Diego State on February 23, 2025. Despite showing great potential and spirit, the Rainbow Wahine fell short with a final score of 4-2, which brings their overall record to 4-4 this season.
This match marked the first mainland road trip for the Rainbow Wahine, and unfortunately, they returned with a 1-2 record from their journey. But there’s no need for long faces because those Big West Conference games are proving they can hold their own, with an unbeaten start of 2-0 in league play. As they packed their bags for home, the team remained focused on bouncing back stronger.
In this clash of the titans, they kicked things off by securing the coveted doubles point. The atmosphere at the Aztec Tennis Center was electric as Peppi Ramstedt and Shenna Masuda teamed up victoriously, defeating SDSU’s Liisa Varul and Gloria Alogo with a score of 6-4 on Court No. 1.
Adding more excitement to the day, Ana Vilcek and Nikola Homolkova also delivered a stellar performance, beating their opponents Yasmine Kabbaj and Ninon Martinache, also with a score of 6-4 on Court No. 3. The third doubles match featuring Hannah Galindo and Makeilah Nepomuceno was still on the edge, ending with an unfinished score of 6-5 in favor of UH.
Peppi Ramstedt faced the fierce Yasmine Kabbaj and was unable to clinch a set, losing 6-2, 6-3. Ana Vilcek also found herself battling Jo-Yee Chan, ultimately losing 6-2, 6-4. Shenna Masuda put up a phenomenal fight, pushing Liisa Varul to a nail-biting three-set match, but it ended in heartbreak with scores of 6-3, 5-7, 6-0 in favor of SDSU.
Emma Forgac’s match against Zoe Olmos was still in progress, with an unfinished score of 7-5, 6-6, indicating the potential for a close finish. Meanwhile, Makeilah Nepomuceno faced Vesa Gjinaj but couldn’t find her groove, losing 6-3, 6-0.
Despite this setback, the Rainbow Wahine’s enthusiasm remains intact as they prepare to head back home. They will be looking to snag some more conference wins as they take on UC San Diego in their next matchup on March 1 at 11:00 a.m. at the UH Tennis Complex. This is a critical opportunity for them to regain their momentum and continue proving that they have what it takes to shine in this season.
