Grants Community Remembers Richard Irvin “Rick” Buhite, 80
The close-knit town of Grants, NM, is coming together to celebrate the rich and fulfilling life of Richard Irvin “Rick” Buhite, who sadly passed away on April 1, 2025, at the age of 80. Known for his unwavering dedication to family and passion for outdoor adventures, Rick’s legacy will surely live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
Early Life and Adventures
Rick was born on October 5, 1944, to Ralph and Montrose Buhite in Erie, Pennsylvania. Growing up alongside his sister, Kathleen, he spent his childhood immersed in activities like the Boy Scouts and working as a newspaper carrier for the Erie Times-News. After graduating from McDowell High School in 1963, Rick took off on a thrilling journey to Anaheim, California on his Zundap motorcycle. Faced with some mechanical issues, he had to part ways with the bike in St. Louis but didn’t let that dampen his spirit.
Upon reaching Anaheim, Rick found a job as a trumpet maker at F.E. Olds & Sons, which kicked off his remarkable work life. In 1966, he married his sweetheart, Susan Pifer, embarking on a journey of love and family together.
A Career Built on Precision
Rick dedicated many years to his career, earning an AA Degree in Machine Technologies in 1972. He spent 37 years honing his craft in tool and die making, always striving for precision and quality in his work. But while work was important, nothing meant more to Rick than his family. In 1975, Susan and Rick welcomed their only daughter, Kimberly, adding another chapter to their loving family story.
Outdoor Enthusiast and Search & Rescue Hero
Rick found immense joy in outdoor pursuits. Whether it was rock climbing, hiking, or canoeing, he loved being in nature. He even conquered Mt. Whitney, California’s highest peak, not once but twice! His passion for the outdoors led him to join the Search & Rescue community; he took a Basic Mountaineering Training Course in 1986 and began his career with Saddleback Search and Rescue.
He later became a Reserve Deputy with the San Dimas Mountain Rescue Team, eventually rising to the rank of Captain. After retiring in 2010, Rick and Susan moved to Grants, NM. Even in retirement, Rick continued his Search & Rescue work with the Cibola County Sheriff’s Office and later the New Mexico State Police, embodying the spirit of service to his community.
A Loving Family Man
Rick was more than just a dedicated rescuer and outdoor enthusiast; he was a loving husband to Susan and a proud grandfather to his three grandchildren: Hailee, KayCee, and Cody. His family was his pride and joy, and he was always there to support them. Rick is also survived by his sister Kathleen, niece Heather, and several other relatives, all of whom cherish their memories of him.
Join Us for a Celebration of Life
As a way to honor Rick and celebrate his incredible life, an informal gathering will take place at “At The Elks”, located at 805 Charles St., Grants, NM, on April 17, 2025, at 1 PM. The community is invited to share stories, laughter, and memories of this remarkable man who touched the lives of so many.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to commemorate Rick’s life can consider making a contribution to the Cibola County “Shop with a Cop” Program through Kim Buhite-Howery, ensuring that Rick’s legacy of giving back continues.
Rick Buhite will be remembered as not just a hero on the mountain but as a loving family man who brought joy to all who crossed his path. His spirit will forever resonate in the hearts of the Grants community.
