Street sweeping in Fullerton with vehicles moved for effective cleaning.

News Summary

Fullerton is set to resume strict street sweeping enforcement starting February 24, 2025, after a pause during the pandemic. The new alternate side street sweeping schedule aims to prevent debris from clogging storm drains and will be enforced by a third-party company. Residents are reminded to adhere to the new parking rules to avoid $42 citations. Additionally, changes to overnight parking regulations have been introduced, requiring residents to stay updated on local enforcement measures. Fullerton aims for cleaner streets while balancing community parking needs.

Fullerton Kicks Off Street Sweeping Citations with New Rules

Fullerton, are you ready for some changes on our streets? Starting February 24, 2025, the city decided to get serious about street sweeping enforcement once again. This comes after a pause during the pandemic when everyone stayed home and the streets were less crowded. Residents might recall that parking citation enforcement was briefly reinstated back in September 2023, but many voiced their concerns about parking issues around town.

After hearing those complaints, the city took a step back to assess the situation, leading to a new plan for street sweeping. In January 2025, a fresh schedule was approved by the city council that emphasizes an alternate side street sweeping approach. This means that on designated days, cars will need to be moved to allow for effective cleaning.

Why The Fuss Over Street Cleaning?

Street sweeping isn’t just a chore; it plays a crucial role in keeping our roads and waterways clean. The main aim is to prevent litter and debris from making its way into storm drains, which ultimately flow into the ocean. Unfortunately, with the previous lack of enforcement, many residents adopted a “leave my car” mentality, which made it tricky for street sweepers to do their job.

Fullerton’s street sweeping enforcement is handled by a third-party company, SP+, rather than the Fullerton police department. Get ready to see more signs and notices soon! The full rollout of the new street sweeping schedule and signage should be completed within about a year.

What Happens If You Forget?

If you happen to park in violation of the street sweeping rules, be prepared for a ticket that will set you back $42. However, if you’re honing in on the truck’s path, you can park immediately after the sweeper has passed, even when the signs show restrictions. In case you need to pay a citation, there are three ways to do it: by credit card, via phone, or using a check or money order.

Changes to Overnight Parking

2 AM to 5 AM unless you’ve got a special exemption—which is no walk in the park. To achieve the exemption, at least 75% of residents in your area must support it, along with a non-refundable fee of $567.

It’s no surprise that some Fullerton residents felt blindsided by the sharp increase in parking enforcement. So much so, that during peak enforcement times, the revenue from parking citations skyrocketed from around $33,000 to $128,500. That means citations rose dramatically from about 1,000 in July to nearly 7,000 in September due to heightened measures. That’s a serious uptick!

Looking Ahead

As street sweeping enforcement brings new considerations to the forefront, it is a reminder for all of us to stay aware of the parking regulations that impact our daily routines. So, mark those calendars and keep your eyes peeled for the new signs popping up around town. Let’s keep Fullerton clean and tidy together while making sure to park correctly!
