CSUF students providing friendly tax preparation assistance to the community.
On April 12, residents in Fullerton can benefit from a free tax preparation day hosted by IRS-certified student volunteers from Cal State Fullerton. This event offers assistance to individuals and families earning $65,000 or less, including those with disabilities and international students. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Steven G. Mihaylo Hall, Room 2301. This initiative not only helps the community with tax season but also provides valuable hands-on experience for students pursuing careers in accounting.
If you’re living in Fullerton and you haven’t tackled your taxes yet, mark your calendars for April 12! Thanks to a group of dedicated IRS-certified student volunteers from Cal State Fullerton (CSUF), families in the community can receive free tax preparation assistance at a special event designed just for you.
The tax prep extravaganza will kick off at 9 a.m. and run until 2 p.m., located at the ever-busy Steven G. Mihaylo Hall, specifically in Room 2301 at CSUF. The campus can be found at 800 N. State College Blvd., Fullerton, CA 92831. It’s a convenient and friendly environment for those who might be feeling a little stressed about getting their taxes done on time.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program helps individuals and families who earn $65,000 or less. This means that many people in the area can take advantage of the services offered. Additionally, the program welcomes those with disabilities, elderly taxpayers, and even limited English-speaking individuals. International students can also get in on the action, making it truly inclusive.
The program is run by a select group of trained accounting majors from CSUF. These students are not only assisting the community, but they are also gaining invaluable real-world experience that will help them in their future careers, especially in public accounting. Through VITA, they deepen their understanding of the tax filing process, an experience that is hard to come by!
The VITA initiative has been operating for several Saturdays since the beginning of February, and this free service extends all the way up to the Saturday before April 15. It’s a great chance for last-minute tax filers to get everything sorted before the deadline. The student volunteers, led by their peers, are enthusiastic and ready to help take the stress out of tax season.
The importance of VITA cannot be overstated—in addition to providing tax assistance, the program is deeply embedded in the mission of CSUF’s College of Business and Economics. The university’s commitment to supporting first-generation and underrepresented students shines through this initiative, as it promotes an inclusive environment where students feel empowered to succeed.
One notable figure in the program is Nyasha Davis, the president of VITA. Through her role, she is not only enhancing her skills in tax preparation but has also earned an internship with KPMG as part of a recognized program. This highlights how engaging in VITA can open doors to exciting career opportunities while benefitting the local community simultaneously.
Alongside their volunteer work, students involved in VITA also benefit from various organizations that facilitate networking opportunities with professionals in the accounting industry. This access is crucial for budding accountants as they make connections that can significantly impact their career prospects down the line.
If you’re sitting on paperwork and feeling overwhelmed with your taxes, remember this Saturday is your chance to get it done. With the impressive support of CSUF’s accounting students and the friendly atmosphere of the campus, you can walk away not only with filed taxes but also a sense of accomplishment. So grab your documents and head over to Cal State Fullerton—it’s time to let the experts help you!
