Law students facing technical issues during the California bar exam

In a surprising twist, the California State Bar has revealed that it employed the power of artificial intelligence to help craft some of the multiple-choice questions for the February 2025 bar exam. However, this decision has not gone over well with many examinees and legal professionals. After the exam, a swell of complaints poured in as candidates faced significant technical issues that hindered their ability to complete the exam.
It seems that the excitement surrounding AI’s involvement was quickly overshadowed by chaos during test day. Of the 171 multiple-choice questions featured on the exam, a whopping 100 came from Kaplan, 48 were lifted from first-year law student exams, and an unusual 23 were created with AI help from ACS Ventures.
Due to the overwhelming technical difficulties, a significant change has been proposed. The Committee of Bar Examiners has voted to lower the passing score from 560 to 534. Moreover, around 367 people who took the exam had their multiple-choice answers filled in using a statistical method based on their overall performance. An internal review revealed that only a mere 8% of test takers faced no issues during the exam, while a staggering 61% reported significant disruptions that directly impacted their performance. These findings have raised eyebrows and sparked questions regarding the exam’s fairness.
The State Bar’s executive director has expressed confidence in the validity of the AI-assisted questions in determining a candidate’s competency in legal matters. However, this reassurance hasn’t soothed the worries of critics. Many experts in the legal field have voiced their concerns over using AI to create essential exam content, with some deeming the situation as “unbelievable” and a sign of profound mismanagement. Others agree that while AI may have potential in generating questions, it should be accompanied by careful vetting done by professionals with legal expertise.

The institution plans to tighten its approach to the development of exam materials and is looking forward to offering new study resources based on the feedback they’ve received.
