Cal State Fullerton women's water polo team in action during a match.
The Cal State Fullerton women’s water polo team faced a difficult weekend, suffering three defeats at the Aztec Invitational on March 15-16, 2025. Despite showing moments of promise, including a brief lead against Indiana and competitive play against Bucknell, the Titans struggled with shooting accuracy and capitalizing on power plays. With a loss to UC San Diego and two narrow defeats, the team now looks to improve as they prepare for their upcoming matches at The Titan Mini Invitational on March 22, 2025.
In sunny Fullerton, California, the Cal State Fullerton women’s water polo team faced a challenging weekend filled with disappointment, as they lost all three matches they played during the weekend of March 15-16, 2025. The Titans strived to make a splash but unfortunately found themselves on the receiving end of tough competition, battling against ranked opponents.
The Titans’ first match of the weekend pitted them against No. 11 UC San Diego. It looked like an uphill battle from the start, as the Tritons took an early lead, making it 3-0 in the first quarter. However, the Titans showed resilience, as Taylor Mason scored just as the first quarter buzzer sounded, giving Fullerton a glimmer of hope.
Cal State Fullerton fought back valiantly, with Destiny Hernandez converting a penalty shot to keep the Titans neck-and-neck with UCSD. Despite their efforts, the Tritons continued to extend their lead throughout the match, ultimately defeating the Titans with a score of 14-8. It was a tough pill to swallow, especially knowing they had moments where they looked competitive.
On March 16, the Titans entered their second match of the weekend at the Aztec Invitational, this time against No. 17 Indiana. In a surprising start, CSUF jumped ahead with an early lead of 3-1 during the first quarter. Goals flowed in from Hernandez, Emme Doube-MacLeod, and Delaney Latham, exciting the crowd and fans alike.
However, the good vibes didn’t last long, as Indiana responded with a dominating 6-0 run, taking control of the game and leaving the Titans struggling to keep up. In the end, the match concluded with Indiana triumphing over Cal State Fullerton 13-7. The Titans had a promising start but couldn’t maintain their momentum.
The disappointment didn’t end there for the Titans as they faced Bucknell University in their opening game of the Aztec Invitational. Packed with intensity, this match turned into a nail-biter as both teams exchanged leads. The Titans managed to tie the game on multiple occasions, including an 8-8 tie in the fourth quarter.
However, Bucknell struck back with two quick goals to surge ahead 10-8. Although Mia Solorzano found the back of the net for the Titans with just 49 seconds left in the game, it wasn’t enough to pull off a miracle. CSUF narrowly missed a last-second shot, sealing the game in favor of Bucknell.
Throughout the weekend, the Titans faced challenges with their shooting accuracy, managing to score only 8 out of 25 attempts. They had a particularly tough time when it came to capitalizing on power play opportunities, converting just 4 of 11 chances. These statistics highlight the areas where improvements are needed as the Titans look to rebound.
While this weekend’s losses were tough to swallow, the Titans are gearing up for their upcoming matches. They will be returning to familiar territory as they host The Titan Mini Invitational at Fullerton College Pool on March 22, 2025. Their opponents will be Macalester College and Concordia University Irvine, and the team is eager to show they’ve learned from their recent experiences.
As the Titans Aquatic Center remains unavailable for use, the team is determined to turn things around. Fans can look forward to their next game set for 9:00 a.m. on March 22, ready to cheer on the Titans as they strive for victory!
