Huntington Beach Celebrates Tony Strickland’s Special Election Win

In the sunny city of Huntington Beach, excitement is buzzing as Republican Tony Strickland has declared victory in the special election for California’s 36th State Senate District. Although the final vote count won’t be available until later this week, Strickland has held a steady lead of over 50% since the polls closed on February 25.

A District with Diverse Communities

The 36th Senate District stretches along the picturesque Orange County coast from the charming seaside town of Dana Point all the way to bustling Seal Beach. It includes vibrant areas such as Little Saigon and cities like Westminster, Garden Grove, Cerritos, Artesia, and Hawaiian Gardens. This diverse district means Strickland will have a variety of community needs to address as he steps into this role.

From Local Council to State Senate

Strickland, who is currently a member of the Huntington Beach City Council, isn’t a newcomer to politics. He has previously made a name for himself by serving in the state legislature for a full decade, both in the Assembly and the Senate. This experience is sure to play a crucial role as he embarks on his new journey.

With a significant lead of 51.3% of the vote, he has expressed confidence that his margin is enough to win outright, avoiding a runoff. Strickland noted the presence of several thousand mail-in votes yet to be counted, but he feels optimistic about his position. His campaign was focused on key issues that resonate with voters, such as the ongoing state gas tax, public safety measures, and an intriguing initiative he refers to as “DOGE California.” This plan aims to enhance government efficiency and accountability.

Changes on the Local Council

Following his victory announcement, Strickland will step down from his position on the Huntington Beach City Council on March 10. A replacement will be appointed during the March 18 city council meeting, ensuring that the local governance continues to operate smoothly during this transition.

Election Certainty on the Horizon

The official certification of the election results is expected by March 6. While Strickland’s inauguration date has yet to be confirmed, his supporters are hopeful to see him take office soon. He is determined to work towards making California “golden again,” a nod to his vision of restoring the state’s governance and tackling policies that, in his view, have led to challenges under current leadership.

Competitive Race with Challenging Candidates

This special election saw participation from three other candidates: Democratic contenders Jimmy Pham and Julie Diep, along with fellow Republican John Briscoe. The competition was spirited but ultimately, Pham conceded the race, recognizing he did not have a clear avenue to victory. He emphasized the importance of effective representation for working families in his final remarks.

Julie Diep didn’t comment specifically on her results but had earlier acknowledged the difficulties Democrats were facing in this election cycle. Meanwhile, John Briscoe also conceded and congratulated Strickland on his success.

A Shifting Political Landscape

Strickland received a total of 80,946 votes, with Jimmy Pham trailing at 43,683 votes (27.7%), followed by Julie Diep with 22,614 votes (14.3%), and John Briscoe with 10,514 votes (6.7%). Interestingly, registered voters in the district show a Republican majority at 37.11%, compared to Democrats at 33.93%, with 22.61% registered as having no party affiliation.

Strickland’s victory is a bright spot for California Republicans at a time when they are beginning to flip additional seats and strengthen their presence in the state legislature. With this success, Strickland hopes to further build on this trend to bring about positive change for the residents of California.
